Republican Chairman Michael Steele confirmed
the skepticism of many conservatives by effectively declaring himself to be pro-choice on both abortion and gay-marriage in
an interview with GQ Magazine. When asked whether he thought states should be able to decide for themselves whether to legalize
gay marriage, Steele answered, "Absolutely." But Steele went even farther in betraying conservatives when discussing
his position on abortion:

GQ: Are you saying you think women
have the right to choose abortion?
Steele: Yeah. I mean, again, I think
that’s an individual choice.
GQ: You do?
Steele: Yeah. Absolutely.
***
GQ: Okay, but if you overturn
Roe v. Wade, how do women have the choice you just said they should have?
Steele: The states should make that choice.
That’s what the choice is. The individual choice rests in the states. Let them decide.
GQ: Do pro-choicers have a place
in the Republican Party?
Steele: Absolutely!
Steele then went on to boast of how inclusive
the Republican Party has been towards pro-aborts:
Democrats wouldn’t allow a pro-lifer to speak at their convention. We’ve had many a
pro-choicer speak at ours—long before Rudy Giuliani. So yeah, that’s something I’ve been trying to get our party to appreciate.
It’s not just in our words but in our actions, we’ve been a party that’s much more embracing.
Steele, in full damage control mode since the article's release, is amazingly
still insisting that he is pro-life, saying he supports the GOP platform and "its call for a Human Life Amendment.”
So which Steele should we believe? The one who says he is pro-life or the one who co-founded the pro-abortion Republican Leadership Council with Christine Todd-Whitman? (Hint: If the answer isn't obvious to you, it means you are too dumb to vote.)
